What I  Want To Accomplish as a Member of the BOE

As a member of the Board of Education I will

  • Work with the Governor and the legislature to achieve true education reform.

  • Work to clarify the roles expected of each participant in education – from the Governor    to the Parent

  • Work toward placing control of the schools at a more local level within two years.

  • Put principals in a leadership role, rather than just another level in the bureaucracy.

  • Work to institute funding based on a weighted student formula, a more fair way of allocating funds.

  • Provide fair funding, including facilities funding for charter schools.

  • Encourage participation of parents in the educational process.

  • Work to institute operational and teaching audits of schools that do well and compare with schools that are failing to see what the differences are in the process.  This would be used as a tool to implement changes to improve failing schools.

  • Budget money in such away as to provide air conditioning for schools in areas that need it. Classrooms in excess of ninety degrees are a danger to our students and a deterrent to learning and teaching.

  • Work with the Legislature and the Police Departments to keep drugs out of our students’ lives.  I would actively lobby for harsher sentences for anyone selling illicit drugs to a student.

Short Bio

Born and raised in Forest Grove, Oregon, I moved to Hawaii in 1975.  The Navy brought my husband, Garry, and me here - the beauty of the islands kept us here. We have lived in Ewa Beach for over 26 years. My background is in business.  I worked for a wholesale company in sales and marketing for over ten years. I owned my own small business for several years and currently I work as an independent consultant.
I have served on the Ewa Neighborhood Board where I was chair of the parks committee and a member of the zoning and education committees.  I served on the Ewa Vision Team and worked with the Weed and Seed Program in Ewa Beach.  I have volunteered with the AARP Tax Aide program and have been an adult literacy volunteer.

Citizens Acheiving Reform in Education, a  panel of citizens and educational experts met in 2003 to recommend changes to  Hawaii's educational system.

In December of 2003 they reported their findings to Governor Linda Lingle, who incorporated them in her Education Reform Bills presented to the  2004 Legislature.

Almost without exception the legislature, with the backing of most current Board of Education members, ignored the recommendations of C.A.R.E. and the Governor and  voted for  "smoke & mirrors" reform.

To truly  reform  Hawaii's  educational system you, the voter, must be willing to vote for new members on the Board of education and you must throw out legislators that are unwilling to make the changes necessary to acheive our educational goals.
